Lotus confident of further success
28 March 2013
Team boss Eric Boullier says he is sure that Lotus will enjoy more success on track during the 2013 F1 season despite a difficult outing in Malaysia last weekend.
Having tasted victory in the opening race of the year in Australia thanks to Kimi Raikkonen, the Enstone-based squad endured a more trying weekend at Sepang as both Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean were unable to keep pace with the front-runners.
Speaking following a race where the duo finished sixth and seventh, Boullier admitted that the early stages of the race had cost his men dear, with the performance as the race wore on suggesting that good things lie ahead.
"On Sunday it was not the best start we've ever made, and then after we lost a lot in the first stint compared to the leaders, especially Mercedes," he was quoted by
. "If you then compare the race pace after we were not bad, we were there, so our level of confidence going into the next two races is much, much higher and we're looking forward to racing there.
"Of course, if there are special conditions it is always difficult, but if there are normal racing conditions then we will be back in the fight for the podium, and maybe the win."
Admitting that things had been as tight as he expected between the top teams, Boullier also responded to reports that rivals Red Bull had been pushing for a change to the tyres used in F1 by insisting he saw no reason for change.
"How can they complain when they've just had a one-two?” he said. “That would not be very understandable. Pirelli has no reason to change their tyre spec. It is the 2013 tyre spec and that is it. I don't think there is any interest or wish from Pirelli to change anything.
"Red Bull won, and they are going to win more. There are worse cars in the top positions with these tyres, so there is no reason why they have to change."
