F1 Bahrain 2013: Raikkonen in, Grosjean out after Q2

20 April 2013

There were mixed emotions at Lotus after the second phase of qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix as Kimi Raikkonen's late escape from the drop zone was marred by team-mate Romain Grosjean's equally belated exit.

With just a couple of minutes remaining in the 15-minute session, Raikkonen found himself sharing a spot in the endangered half-dozen with the likes of Jenson Button and Adrian Sutil. All three were on track at the right point, however, escaping into the top ten and demoting Daniel Ricciardo and Grosjean with no time left for them to recover, the Frenchman particularly frustrated to have been given just one run to the majority's two.

Grosjean, who is running a new chassis this weekend, will take heart from the fact that Raikkonen came from twelfth on the grid into a podium position last season, but the likes of Sergio Perez, Ricciardo, Nico Hulkenberg, Valtteri Bottas and Jean-Eric Vergne will face a tougher task on Sunday.

Sebastian Vettel claimed the fastest time of the session, again running on the medium Pirelli compound, while Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso, Paul di Resta, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa joined Raikkonen, Sutil and Button in the pole position shoot-out.
