Hamilton facing 'tough challenge' in Bahrain

Lewis Hamilton: I couldn't quite find the pace today...
Lewis Hamilton has admitted he faces a tough challenge on Sunday in the Bahrain Grand Prix given he will only start ninth.

Hamilton qualified in fourth place for the fourth round in the 2013 F1 World Championship. However he will drop five places due to a penalty for a gearbox change.

Mercedes had to make replace the unit after a piece of debris on track caused the Briton to suffer a left rear tyre failure at the end of final practice this morning, which in turn damaged the suspension and the gearbox.

“I couldn't quite find the pace today and with losing five places from changing the gearbox, we've got a tough challenge ahead starting from ninth place,” Hamilton confirmed.

“These things happen though, and I'll do my best tomorrow. The best chance to gain some positions will come at the start and then we'll see how it goes. Tyre degradation will be a huge factor so it's going to be a very interesting race.”

Meanwhile, Hamilton was happy to see his team-mate, Nico Rosberg take pole and match what he achieved in China just seven days ago.

“It wasn't the best of days for me but big congratulations to Nico. Back to back pole positions for the team is great and Nico did a really good job out there,” Lewis added.

“First and fourth places were a strong result this afternoon," Mercedes motorsport boss, Toto Wolff chipped in, "and we have to be very happy with Nico's pole position. He did a great job and both of his timed laps in Q3 would have put him on pole position.

"Lewis has had a more difficult and disrupted weekend so far so qualifying was all about damage limitation for him, which he managed to do extremely well.

"However, we should be under no illusions about tomorrow.

"It will be a very tough race and it will be important for us to race hard in order to get both cars to the finish in strong positions,” he concluded.

Prof x, yes many believe that the cooler temperatures has effected tyres/cars performance, but strange how it affected team mates driving the same cars differently. It will be an interesting race tomorrow, first there are the two fastest scalding cats on the grid off a starting line starting 3rd and 4th secondly both are at least 8km/h faster on the straight than the RB8 but I don’t know the WO4 top speed yet.
