Perez: Hopefully we have turned the corner now...

2 May 2013

Sergio Perez has said he is hopeful McLaren has now 'turned the corner' following the team's dismal start to F1 2013.

McLaren opted to go radical with the new MP4-28 and to date the decision has not paid off. Indeed the squad has only scored 23 points in the Constructors' Championship and sits a lowly sixth in the rankings - 3 points behind Force India and 86 behind the current leaders, Red Bull. Furthermore while the Woking-based squad has progressed since Australia, Jenson Button's fifth place finish in China remains the highlight.

Despite all the troubles though, Perez maintains he is enjoying being a McLaren driver and after his fighting display in Bahrain, en-route to sixth, he will be eager to maintain that momentum at the Spanish Grand Prix next weekend.

“It has been great getting to know the whole team - the experience has been all I thought it would be, and more,” Perez told ESPN.

“Everyone has treated me so well and I feel like I have settled in great. After a tough start to the season, we are all united to get this team back where it belongs at the front of the grid. Hopefully, we have turned the corner now.”

Looking to the event at the Circuit de Catalunya and the start of the Euorpean season, the Mexican added that he enjoys racing on the older tracks. He also believes it is important F1 remembers its roots.

“It is something I'm looking forward to because Europe is really the home of F1 - the circuits have a lot of history. Tracks like Monaco, Silverstone, Spa and Monza have been on the calendar since F1 started in 1950 - I think it's great that we still have those circuits that represent the sport and all its history.

“We can never lose them.”
