Spanish Grand Prix 2013: Raikkonen, Alonso close points gap
12 May 2013
Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso both used the Spanish Grand Prix to close in on F1 world championship leader Sebastian Vettel after five rounds of the 2013 season.
The German had come into Barcelona with a commanding lead over the local favourite following his two wins from four races, but Alonso trimmed the gap between them by 13 points after taking an emotional victory in front of his home crowd.
With Vettel only able to take fourth place, Raikkonen also homed in on the Red Bull driver, closing his deficit to just four points with a hard-fought second place. Felipe Massa, who completed the podium, moved above RBR's Mark Webber and to within five points of Lewis Hamilton, who slipped a place after failing to score in Spain, despite starting on the front row.
In the constructors' championship, Red Bull remains ahead, but now by the reduced margin of 14 point over Ferrari, with Lotus down to third, 20 points off the lead after Romain Grosjean was unable to add to Raikkonen's score.
