The race gets underway with an all-Mercedes front-row and a solid start allows Nico Rosberg to keep the lead as the field heads into turn one...
As the German battles hard to keep Sebastian Vettel at bay, there is bad luck further in the pack for Romain Grosjean, who is the first retirement of the race with suspension damage...
Fernando Alonso pits from third on lap ten, with Rosberg and Vettel diving in on the following lap. When they resume, Alonso is able to get between the two Germans into second spot and within two laps, he moves ahead as Rosberg starts to fade...
Alonso takes the lead when Esteban Gutierrez dives in for his first stop - the Mexican having run in P1 for the first time as the stops cycle through. He goes on to enjoy arguably his best race to date for Sauber despite failing to score...
As Alonso leads at the front of the field, there is drama at the rear as Giedo van der Garde is left with three wheels on his Caterham...
Also struggling down the field is Lewis Hamilton - who is never in contention for points despite his front row start...
As the race goes on, the two Ferrari men are out front but a charging Raikkonen is on the move - chasing down Vettel before taking third from the championship leader...
Raikkonen gambles on a three-stop strategy and is able to split the Ferrari drivers out front - but he can't prevent Alonso from taking victory; the Spaniard stopping on his slowing down lap to collect a Spanish flag that he waves in celebration...
Alonso, Raikkonen and Massa celebrate on the podium - the latter finishing in the top three for the first time this season....
However, it is the performance of the Pirelli tyres that prove to the main talking point post-race after multiple stops are the order of the day - leading to the announcement that changes will be made by the supplier in time for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
