Chilton: It’s not all about the money

Max Chilton insists his move into F1 wasn't all down to the financial support afforded to him by his father
Max Chilton has again insisted that his move into F1 isn't simply down the financial support he has behind him.

The young Briton graduated to F1 this season with Marussia having spent three seasons in GP2 – taking a best finish of fourth in the standings in 2012.

Much has been made of the backing that both Chilton and his older brother Tom – now racing with defending champions RML in the World Touring Car Championship – have enjoyed during their careers but the 22-year-old insisted that his move into the top tier of the sport was as much down to talent as anything else.

"I've had that negativity all my career," he told the Sunday Telegraph when the issue of backing from his father was raised. "You have to put it behind you, and not focus on it. It is complete rubbish. It's fuel to drive you on to be even better. I put it behind me a long time ago.

“Sometimes, people are critical and use my father's support as something against me,” Chilton says. “But ultimately an F1 team would never accept you unless you could do the job. I am here to become a race-winner and, I hope, a world champion. I do this to prove things to myself. I know that I am good enough.”

Chilton added that he had insisted that he didn't want his father to fund a move into F1, with a group of blue-chip companies having come together to help make his dream become a reality.

“We never even talked about it,” he said. “He has always been passionate about racing, and I have been passionate about winning. Clearly, I couldn't have got to a certain level without him, but no one in junior categories could without a major sponsor.

“F1 was the only stage where I didn't want him to help me.”
