Di Resta out in Q1 in Monaco

Paul di Resta goes out in Q1 in Monte Carlo

Force India's Paul di Resta was the big casualty in first qualifying at the Monaco Grand Prix, although Felipe Massa also missed out, unable to run after his crash in final practice.

With rain falling before Q1, conditions were damp and slippery to start with, although they soon started to dry out and the times tumbled. In the end di Resta missed the cut by just 0.227s, with Charles Pic, Esteban Gutierrez, Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi also failing to progress. Bianchi didn't even set a time, forced to stop at the start of the session with smoke pouring from the back of his Marussia. Massa's mechanics meanwhile tried to fix his car, but ran out of time.

Pastor Maldonado was quickest, ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne, Fernando Alonso and Romain Grosjean. Grosjean got out late on after his off in FP3 and was immediately on the pace and making the most of his fresh intermediate tyres. Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg rounded out the top eight. Giedo van der Garde just made it through for Caterham and was 16th.

More to follow after Q2...
