After a decent start to the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix
on Sunday, Jenson Button
soon grew frustrated first with another assertive display from his team mate Sergio Perez and then when he was overtaken by a surprise move by Force India's Adrian Sutil.
But the Briton continued to slog it out and gradually things turned more in his favour - showing how important it is not to lose faith but to keep trying right to the chequered flag, he pointed out.
"Things weren't looking very good initially, but the Monaco Grand Prix
is one of those races where you need to hang in there until the very end, because anything can happen – and today it did," he said.
“My opening laps were good, I overtook Adrian and tried to have a go at Fernando at the hairpin," he continued, evidently somewhat amazed to find himself tangling so strongly with one of the main championship contenders given the Mclaren's form so far this season.
"I tapped his rear wheel, so I wasn't really paying attention when Checo put a really good move on me out of the tunnel under braking for the Harbour Chicane," he added.
After that it looked as through Button would struggle to finish in the points, but when the race turned into a game of two halves following the mid-session red flag hiatus for Pastor Maldonado's crash the latter stages of the race turned more to Button's favour albeit after losing another position son after the race resumed.
“After the restart, Adrian also made a really good move on me into the hairpin – I didn't actually think it would be possible because I'd tried it on Fernando earlier and it didn't work," Button admitted.
"Then, in the last few laps, Checo and Kimi tangled, and suddenly there was a battle behind them because they were circulating slowly in their damaged cars," he continued. "So I took the opportunity to jump up the inside of Fernando at Rascasse, which was quite fun, and came home sixth!"
Even though he gained from that clash between Perez and Raikkonen, Button would have preferred to see his team mate finish the race rather than end up parked up prematurely at Rascasse.
