Juncadella linked to Williams role

5 June 2013

Reigning F3 Euroseries champion Daniel Juncadella could be in line to become the next development driver at Williams thanks to his Mercedes links.

That is the rumour doing the rounds in the Spanish media following Williams' announcement that it would be switching from Renault to Mercedes power next season.

Juncadella's F3 success at the wheel of a Mercedes-powered Dallara netted him a DTM drive with the Three Pointed Star but, unlike other single-seater converts in the field, he hasn't entirely given up on his ambition of being an F1 driver. Already helping out at the Mercedes works team in Brackley, the Spaniard could be farmed out to Williams from 2014, with the Grove squad providing more of an opportunity for him to develop – and potentially progress to a race seat – in coming years.

The rumour, which appeared in Marca, is given extra strength by the fact that both team and driver share a common cause to promote Kazakh capital Astana, with Williams recently signing an agreement with investment company TAK and Juncadella having been backed by the Astana Group for several years.

Suggestions that the Williams-Mercedes link could see the 22-year old at the wheel of an FW35 at this summer's Young Drivers test, however, are currently being played down by Juncadella.

Susie Wolff is currently Williams' nominated third driver.
