F1 boss says Mercedes were wrong to do Pirelli test

Bernie Ecclestone believes Mercedes should have refused to do the Pirelli test following the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona
Bernie Ecclestone says Mercedes should not have agreed to do Pirelli's tyre test at the Circuit de Catalunya in May.

The news that Mercedes had conducted a tyre test with the sole tyre supplier after the Spanish Grand Prix emerged over the weekend in Monte Carlo.

After an investigation by race stewards there, the matter was referred to the FIA and now both Pirelli and Mercedes will appear in front of the FIA International Tribunal in Paris next Thursday.

F1 boss Ecclestone, however, does not believe Pirelli were in the wrong, and that it was up to Mercedes to turn down the test: "Wait until the tribunal, they've got all the facts," Ecclestone told Adam Cooper's F1 blog.

"Pirelli were doing the right thing, obviously. They couldn't get out of a tyre problem, if there had been proper testing, which there should be, they wouldn't be in this problem.

"What is right, is right, you know. The one thing an unmarried girl has got is the right to say 'no'. You would have to reckon that Mercedes were in that position."

The 82-year-old was also quick to deny any knowledge of a return to the sport for French tyre company, Michelin: "No idea. I haven't got a clue," he added.

"I haven't spoken to anyone. We have a long-term contract with Pirelli, as the FIA do. And I think most of the teams have - I think they've done a deal with all the teams they want to do a deal with."
