Jenson Button insists that Martin Whitmarsh is the right man to turn around McLaren's so far disappointing season
Jenson Button has reiterated his faith in McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh, insisting he is the right man to turn their season around.

McLaren failed to score any points for the first time in 65 races at the 2013 F1 Canadian Grand Prix last weekend, and now head to their home race at Silverstone on the back of a below par performance.

The Woking outfit have struggled throughout the 2013 season and currently sit just sixth in the constructors' standings behind the likes of Lotus and Force India.

However, Button says that the team are united as one and that Whitmarsh is the the right man for the job going forward: "As far as I know everyone's united, yes,” he told SkySportsNews.

"Martin's is a really good leader and he's a proper human being as well. He's a guy that you can trust, you can believe in. I feel that everyone at the factory, all the people I speak to when I'm there feel exactly the same.

"It's so difficult for a Team Principal when a team that normally wins grands prix suddenly isn't winning grands prix, but I think he is the best leader to bring us through this difficult time."

Button has yet to finish higher than fifth in a race this season and has twice been in altercations with team-mate Sergio Perez on track.

The 2009 world champion says he feels that the car is improving every race, but admits it is unlikely he will be able to deliver a victory for his home fans at Silverstone next weekend: "We can see improvements," he added.

"The last race for us was a very, very difficult weekend but, yes, I feel there are some improvements in the pipeline and we can see ourselves fighting for a better result.

"Fighting for a win is going to be very difficult here, and I know that's what the British fans want, but I don't think we're going to be able to give them that. But we're going to do the best job we can and fight for as many points as we can, so you never know what the end result can be.

"This circuit is a very different circuit to the last race. It's a lot smoother, it's a lot faster, it's a lot more flowing and it does suit our car a lot more.”

@whitew "Button is not a lead driver and is moving the team backwards. They need someone like Lewis or Kimi to ove the team forward again." Yes whitew, they need Lewis back to help them with the bad car. After all, last time they had a bad car he was the bomb! Round 7 2009 - 13th - During this GP, he got on the radio to tell the team how crap the car was and that they need to build him a new car if they want to win. Technical feedback genius at work! Round 8 2009 - 16th Round 9 2009 - 18th Yes, McLaren need Hamilton back badly - NOT!
