Nigel Mansell says he feels Lewis Hamilton's decision move to Mercedes this season could see him 'get better and better'.

Having spent his entire F1 career to date with McLaren, Hamilton made the switch of teams over the winter and has managed three podium finishes so far.

While he has yet to taste victory in Mercedes colours, the Briton holds fourth in the championship standings going into his home event at Silverstone although some have questioned whether the freedom he is now being afforded could be detrimental to his chances of adding another title to his resume.

Speaking to the BBC however, Mansell said he felt sure that the 2008 title winner can go on to add to his solitary crown and would only improve as a driver.

"He has at least 12 years in him and could be a prolific winner," Mansell said. "I won my world championship when I was 39, so because of the longevity of a race car driver, with all the safety they have, coupled with the commitment and the desire he has, Hamilton can win it again.

"I think the move he has made to Mercedes is fantastic. In time he will get better and better. Once he settles down and gets a season underneath him he will start to absolutely fly and win races.

"When everything comes together he can become a dominant British race driver again."

Hamilton will hope to open his win account this weekend at Silverstone, and Mansell said he felt that the support of the home fans could push the Mercedes man to victory.

"The favourites are obviously Ferrari, who normally go very well at Silverstone, and Red Bull, who are doing an exceedingly good job again," he said. "But I think Lewis and Mercedes are finding form and he and his teammate Nico Rosberg will be right at the forefront. Lewis has an outside chance of victory.

"The crowd lifts British drivers, they support all British drivers and it is up those drivers to translate that into a bit of speed and commitment in the car and I always found it worked for me."
