Maldonado: We’re not where we want to be

Pastor Maldonado: Hopefully tomorrow we can work on our race pace and fight with the teams around us to move up a few positions...
Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas could only manage 16th and 17th on the grid for Williams, as the team's 2013 struggle reached the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Unfortunately for the famous outfit, it seems unlikely that the race will bring about a result to celebrate as it looks for its first points this season, something that seems improbable after another woeful qualifying.

Maldonado knocked out his team-mate in the dying moments of Q1, but his failure to make further progress led to concern at Williams after promising signs from practice. Nevertheless, the Venezuelan has far from abandoned hope of a good race.

“We were expecting to be a bit closer to the top ten today, but we were struggling to put everything together in the car for one lap,” Maldonado explained, “Hopefully, tomorrow, we can work on our race pace and fight with the teams around us to move up a few positions. We need to keep improving as a team because we're still not where we want to be but, race by race, we are aiming to close the gap.”

Maldonado's rookie team-mate came into the weekend on the back of a strong performance in qualifying last time out in Canada, but struggled to build on that effort and admits there is work to do for Williams to reach the realm of regular points-scorers.

“We were unlucky to miss out on Q2 today as I was very close to my team-mate and we could have both made it through,” Bottas sighed, “There are always things you can do better during a lap, but we didn't have the pace to be in the top ten today so we need to do everything we can to get closer. We will look at our strategy going into tomorrow and try to maximise our potential for the race.”
