Nico Rosberg claimed victory in an eventful British Grand Prix marred by multiple tyre failures and turned on its head by a late DNF for points leader Sebastian Vettel.
The 52-lap event was twice interrupted by the safety car, first to clear away debris caused by spectacular blow-outs to Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Jean-Eric Vergne and, with eleven laps to go, when Vettel's car ground to a halt exiting the final turn.
A fourth Pirelli problem, suffered by Sergio Perez after the final restart was not covered, allowing the race to continue, and Mark Webber – who had been down in 15th on lap one - made the most of Red Bull's decision to pit him while his car was recovered, flying up to second place in short order.
However, Rosberg, who had run second throughout, had just enough in hand to resist the Australian's charge, crossing the line 0.765secs ahead to deny Webber an emotional farewell victory at one of his favourite circuits.
Behind the top two, the order continued to change to the flag before Fernando Alonso, early leader Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen completed the top five, making the most of Vettel's exit to close the championship gap.
