Charles Pic will start the German Grand Prix from the very back of the grid after the Caterham team discovered a problem with his gearbox on the morning of the race.
The Frenchman had been due to start from the inside of row ten, having topped the usual four-car battle between Caterham and Marussia at the back of the field, but will now have to come from 22nd spot after taking the obligatory five-place penalty.
The only drivers to benefit from the change are Jules Bianchi, who moves up to 19th, with Giedo van der Garde and Max Chilton also improving by one place, to 20th and 21st respectively.
At the other end of the grid, meanwhile, it is being reported that Lewis Hamilton's car has suffered a fuel pump leak, giving the Mercedes team a headache – and a race against time – to ensure that the Briton can take up his pole position.
It is only a week since Hamilton lost the lead of his home grand prix to a tyre failure at Silverstone, and he will be hoping that fate doesn't mitigate against a maiden win for Mercedes two weeks in a row.
