Pitlane clampdown confirmed by FIA

The FIA confirms a clampdown on the pit lane rules following the incident in the German Grand Prix that left a cameraman injured
The FIA has confirmed it is seeking immediate changes to the pitlane regulations in the wake of the incident that saw a cameraman injured in the German Grand Prix.

Paul Allen suffered a broken collarbone and broken ribs when he was hit by a wheel that had come loose from the Red Bull of Mark Webber.



On the back of that incident – from which Allen is set to make a full recovery – the FIA has confirmed an immediate ban on anyone other than event marshals and team personnel from being present in the pits during qualifying sessions and the race.

Approved media will now be confirmed solely to the pit wall.

Alongside that move, FIA president Jean Todt has elected to bring forward changes that were planned for the 2014 season, with the governing body having informed teams that it is seeking an immediate change to the Sporting Regulations from the World Motorsport Council.

Those changes will make it mandatory for all team personnel working on a car during a pit stop to wear head protection while the pit lane speed limit will be reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h for all sessions at every event bar Australia, Monaco and Singapore, where a lower limit of 60km/h will be in place.

A written report from Red Bull into the causes of the incident at the Nurburgring is expected to be handed to the FIA on Wednesday, with the information being shared with rival teams in an attempt to improve safety.

Gary Anderson has a sensible column on the BBC F1 site where he argues that slowing down the pit stops by reducing the team members involved would help. When the stop lasts 2.5 seconds it's physically impossible for the lollypop man to know with certainty that all has gone well. 2 people per wheel, 2 jack men and the lollypop man would almost half the number of people currently in the pit lane. So what if the stop takes 5 seconds it would be the same for everyone.

People without the right gear on should never have been there in the first place. I think they also need to do something about this unsafe release, two cars colliding and taking several mechanics out is another inccident waiting to happen.
