Ricciardo pleased with Red Bull 'audition'

Daniel Ricciardo declares himself pleased with his performance during his afternoon of running with Red Bull Racing at Silverstone
Daniel Ricciardo said he was pleased with his performance during testing with Red Bull Racing on Thursday, despite an off in the early stages of his time on track.

The Australian ended the day fastest in his Toro Rosso and was third quickest in Red Bull's RB9 even after a spin in the gravel at Luffield after just seven laps of his afternoon programme.

With Christian Horner having hinted that it was now a fight between Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen for the second seat alongside Sebastian Vettel, the 24-year-old quickly put what he referred to as a 'small mistake' behind him and said he felt he had done what he could to show the team what he is capable of.

"I feel good," he was quoted by Sky Sports. "It's still a bit of a blur, it was pretty hectic day - even yesterday going between meetings in both trucks trying to soak it all in. So I'll look back on a few things tonight and wake up tomorrow and have a better understanding of how it all went.

"I think I drove to my ability and did what I could. It's a bit tricky with the circumstances - we weren't really allowed to adjust the car. Ideally you would like to make some mechanical changes and set the car up for the conditions, but it's going to be the same for all the guys and it was a good opportunity to get behind the wheel and experience two different beasts."

Speaking about his chances of joining Red Bull for 2014, Ricciardo said he wasn't getting carried away and was fully focused on doing the best job possible through the remainder of the year.

"We'll see what happens," he said. "It's not my decision. I've still got the season ahead with Toro Rosso and the last few races have been better so just trying to continue like that. I think this test is something for Red Bull to look at but there's still the rest of the season which they'll observe, so I won't get too caught up in today and I'll now switch my focus back to Toro Rosso.

"Whatever happens, happens. Obviously it was nice to get a few laps in the car. Testing is pretty limited so to get that small opportunity and to see what it's like, if I don't get the chance further down the track that was already a nice little bonus."

I think a lot of people are seriously under estimating DR and his speed. That Torro Rosso has hardly been a good car the last two seasons and he has smashed his team mate in qualifying and then either ran out of tyres I. The race or had some bad strategy calls that have ruined his chance to get some good results. He should of got a podium at silverstone this year but his team left him out on worn tyres. Even Button was amazed at how well Dan has qualified that car at times and I'd say he knows more than us. I'd love to see DR get the chance to have a great car and see what he can do for a full season or two.

I find it strange that RBR are torn between choosing Kimi and Ricciardo. I'd understand if they were torn between JEV and Ricciardo, similar age and experience but Kimi? It's a bit like going to a restaurant and saying "well I'm torn between the steak teriyaki and a ham sandwich" Before anyone gets upset I'm not having a go at Ricciardo, seems like a decent young chap and he's shown some promise. I just find putting Kimi and him on a short list odd.
