Felipe Massa's first lap clash with Mercedes' Nico Rosberg affected his Ferrari's handling for the rest of the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Brazilian revealed after the race on Sunday.

"Today's race was difficult from start to finish, because right from the first lap, at turn 5, after making contact with Rosberg, I lost the left part of the front wing," he explained.

"At that time, stopping to change the nose would have lost valuable time," he added. "So we decided not to come in, but from then on, the balance of the car was never the same.

"I lost a lot in terms of performance, suffering a lot with understeer and oversteer and my tyres degraded more than they should have done," he summed up.

Ferrari's head of technical direction Pat Fry said he was pleased by the efforts of both the team's drivers in trying conditions at the Hungaroring on Sunday: "Both drivers did their utmost, especially Felipe, who from first lap onwards had to drive with a damaged front wing."

The impact on the F138's handling didn't stop Massa fighting to maintain position throughout the afternoon, however - including a close battle with Romain Grosjean which ended with the Lotus getting past on the climb up the hill into turn 4.

It was a move that cost Grosjean a drive-thru penalty as he went off the track limits in the process, a sanction that even Massa thought was unfair on the Frenchman in the circumstances.

"I think it's wrong if he took the penalty for what he did with me," Massa said. "It was not really wrong. I don't think he went four wheels outside, I thought it was only two. No complaints from me."

Massa eventually came home in eighth place, one spot back from where he'd started the race nearly two hours earlier. Although in the points it was nonetheless a disappointing reward for the day's exertions on the scorching heat of Budapest.

"I definitely can't be happy with eighth place, because both in the race and in qualifying, we lacked the pace to fight for the lead," said Massa. "For various reasons, this track doesn't suit our car, but it's precisely because things can change from track to track that we must absolutely stay focused now.

"From now on we will concentrate on the development and on the preparation of the second part of the championship, when I hope we can be more competitive," he added.
