Vettel won’t influence who replaces Webber, says Horner

Christian Horner: I don't think Sebastian has any concerns about going up against any driver, and he hasn't voiced a preference either way...
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has said Sebastian Vettel is not looking to influence who will replace Mark Webber for F1 2014.

Webber confirmed his decision to quit the sport at the end of June, and it now appears either Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen or Toro Rosso ace Daniel Ricciardo will get the nod to replace him, although Fernando Alonso was also linked to the Milton Keynes-based outfit following the Hungarian Grand Prix as F1's silly season reached new heights.

“I don't think he [Vettel] minds to be honest [who is his team-mate],” Horner told the Press Association. “I don't think Sebastian has any concerns about going up against any driver, and he hasn't voiced a preference either way.

“He knows Kimi, he knows Daniel. Both are very quick drivers and would represent a challenge for him, but he has not looked to influence the team in any way as to which way we should be looking.”

“Daniel is at the beginning of his career, but he has the speed, and the rest you won't know until you put him in that situation,” Horner added. “But we've a reasonable amount of information to make a decision.

“We obviously want the two fastest and strongest drivers we can put in the car for next year, and both Daniel and Kimi would represent extremely good options.”

Pressed on if the team could cope with Raikkonen and two 'number one' drivers, Horner insisted it wouldn't be a problem, despite the obvious the teams failings to manage Vettel and Webber, illustrated most obviously at the Malaysian GP earlier this season, when the former ignored team orders and overtook the #2 car to 'steal' the victory.

“Both drivers get the same opportunity,” Horner stated. “It's down to what they do on the track that determines who is the lead driver or not, and the lead driver at any given time is the one who has the most points.”

Ho hum. Same story polished up again and again. We need some better August stories like Chilton to swap seats with Alonso or Sutil eats Hamiltons dog or Taipan buys McLaren. Just needs some creative thinking... :)
