Rosberg: 2014 a 'huge opportunity'

Nico Rosberg says Mercedes has a 'huge opportunity' next year but faces a 'difficult decision' over when and how to switch resources to 2014
Nico Rosberg says he feels the 2014 F1 season will be a 'huge opportunity' for Mercedes, although the German admits that the Brackley-based team faces a difficult decision in the near future as to when to turn its focus to next year.

The team has won three times this season to sit second to Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship, with the W04 having proven to be one of the strongest cars on the grid.

With new engine regulations coming into play next year as F1 switches to 1.6-litre turbo-charged units, many expect Mercedes to be one of the teams to beat next year but while he said he was excited about what lies ahead, Rosberg said he was in two minds about how the team should approach next year.

“It's a difficult question,” he told Auto Moto und Sport when quizzed on whether Mercedes should put all its focus onto next year. “On one hand, I find it cool to come to a race weekend knowing that I have the best car, and knowing that I can challenge for pole position and fight for race wins. It's a great feeling that I'd love to experience more, and I wish that we could push even more.

“On the other hand, half of me thinks there is a huge opportunity for us next year because of the large changes that there are. We can let things be and we can still have success with the car we have if it stays as it is.

“It is a difficult decision for the team to take on how and when to shift resources to next year.”

I don't think we've seen the best of Rosberg yet. The second half of this 2013 season will be foundational to these drivers pecking order in 2014. This summer break is far too long.
