Felipe Massa insists that Ferrari has to work hard to make its car quicker for the second half of the F1 season.

The Italian team has been unable to match the pace of rivals Red Bull and Mercedes in recent races and goes into the second half of the campaign seeking to make sure it doesn't lose more ground in the title race.

While the amount of work the team is able to carry out during the summer break has been restricted by the enforced summer shutdown, Massa said it was vital for Ferrari to do what it could to improve when racing resumes at Spa and to be more competitive than prior to the summer break.

"Development work is very important and we need to make this car faster," he was quoted by TotalRace. "These four weeks between races are very important. We know there is a break for everyone and that the team has to be closed for two weeks where nobody can work. But the work we can do and the ideas people have are important to bring new parts to the next race and to make sure the second half of the season is more competitive than the first."

Massa added that - like a number of other teams - Ferrari still had work to do to get the best from the new Pirelli tyres introduced in Hungary.

"We've seen teams like Mercedes doing a good job with these tyres," he said. "Our car was not as competitive as we expected and this is the most important thing for us.

"On a track where the temperature is high, usually they [Mercedes] would have more problems, and they won the race. So maybe these tyres are better, but we have to wait and see after a few races on different tracks."

Ferrari have won twice this season, with Fernando Alonso taking victory in both China and Spain.
