Grosjean admits Raikkonen exit ‘would be a loss’

Romain Grosjean may be poised to gain from Kimi Raikkonen's exit from Lotus, but admits that the Finn is important to the team's progression.
Romain Grosjean believes that Kimi Raikkonen leaving Lotus would be a major blow for the team, even if it may help strengthen his own position at Enstone.

With the Finn being linked to both Red Bull and Ferrari – despite Lotus' boss Eric Boullier's desperate attempts to keep him on board for a third season – Grosjean confirmed that he would be disappointed to see his team-mate depart just as Lotus shows signs of challenging at the front of the field.

“I always say that losing Kimi would be a loss for the team,” the Frenchman insisted, “He's very good, he's a world champion, [and] it's good to have him as a team-mate. We push each other to the limit.”

Asked whether Raikkonen's potential exit would have any bearing on his own situation within the team – Grosjean is widely tipped to ensure continuity at Lotus in the event of Raikkonen signing elsewhere for 2014 – the Frenchman insisted that he was confident that he would be up to the job.

“If he leaves, then we still have to do the job and try to win races and score a lot of points,” he noted, “At the moment, I think we have a good way of working together but, if he leaves, then I would be more than happy to get the deal and try to keep Lotus where it is or still improve.

Boullier has already been quoted as saying that he is working on both the technical and financial packages to try and tempt Raikkonen to stay, although Grosjean admits that he has been a little preoccupied with the birth of his son to keep on top of developments during the summer break.

“I was a bit busy the last few weeks [and] I didn't have much time to make phone calls, [but] I feel very happy with the team,” he confessed, “It's no secret that I would like to stay there. I think we are on a good progression. There's a lot of talk about Kimi but, to be honest, at the moment, I am just trying to focus on the way back and having the races that we've had in the last two grands prix and doing a good job.”
