Italian Grand Prix: Webber out to break Monza podium duck

Mark Webber: Monza has never been that kind to me; I've had a few retirements and have never finished on the podium, so I want to get a good result there this year!
Red Bull Racing's Mark Webber is targeting a podium finish next weekend at 'one of a kind' Monza.

Webber has had a relatively disappointing season to date and while he has scored points in every race, with the exception of China, he has only had three podiums and has yet to win, although admittedly he was the 'moral' victor in Malaysia, only losing out after team-mate Sebastian Vettel defied team orders and 'stole' the triumph.

Having now decided to retire from F1 and switch to sportscars with Porsche, a move announced back in June, the Italian Grand Prix will be his final F1 race in Europe, and while he has taken over 30 rostrums, he has yet to do so at the home of the tifosi.

“I like Monza a lot because it's very F1 in terms of its history and its atmosphere. All of the greats have raced there and I have an affinity with Italians from my Minardi days,” Webber said in the countdown to round twelve in the 2013 F1 World Championship.

“The track is one of a kind, it's an incredibly fast circuit with high top speeds, so there's a lot of heavy braking.

“The tifosi really make the atmosphere of the weekend, they go ballistic and they're very passionate about a certain red team [Ferrari]. They will climb anything to get a good view: they sit in trees, on billboards and after the second Lesmo they sit on the old banking with their feet hanging over the barrier. Monza is one of the races that I recommend people go to.”

“Monza has never been that kind to me though,” added Webber – his best results to date there are a sixth place back in 2010 and a seventh in 2003.

“I've had a few retirements and have never finished on the podium, so I want to get a good result there this year!” he concluded.
