Fernando Alonso has taken to teasing his fans with the promise of a big announcement posted on Twitter on Sunday evening.

The Spaniard, who remains an unlikely factor in the 2013 F1 'silly season', tweeted that "I have important news coming these days ... Stay tuned here on Twitter and on the Web.. !!!", but revealed little else about what the message referred to.

With Ferrari having already 'let slip' that it was unlikely to be making a driver announcement until after this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, it is barely conceivable that Alonso is promising an announcement regarding his position for next season, or that of under-fire team-mate Felipe Massa.

The Spaniard has, since the Hungarian Grand Prix in late July, been connected to the forthcoming vacancy at Red Bull, but the speculation that he may be about to quit a struggling Ferrari squad - fuelled by the fact that his manager was seen in conversation with RBR's Christian Horner - is more likely to have aimed a kick in the Scuderia's direction as he sees another championship challenge fade away.

An announcement regarding his F1 future aside, it is hard to see the 'important news' as relevant to the sport, unless it is a minor headline regarding personal sponsors, so perhaps Alonso has taken the plunge and proposed to his latest girlfriend...
