FIA poised to end tyre debate?

8 September 2013

FIA president Jean Todt has hinted that Pirelli will shortly be reconfirmed as F1's sole tyre supplier.

The Italian Grand Prix weekend began with Paul Hembery announcing that Pirelli had secured agreements with all eleven teams – having lack one signature at the Belgian round two weeks previously – as well as Bernie Ecclestone's FOM, but, without the FIA's approval, there remained the possibility of a switch to another supplier, with Michelin waiting in the wings.

Although Hembery described the potential for change at this point in the season as 'farcical', there were sections of the paddock that believed Todt favoured a move to the French alternative, but the president said that he was not about to swim against the tide.

"If everybody says we are very happy [with Pirelli], then what is the point going to a tender?" he admitted to journalists at Monza, "If it is unanimous to go in a direction and then if I go to a tender, people will say 'he is against Pirelli and does a tender to try to make it Michelin'.

"I know Michelin has demonstrated some interest but, at the end of the day, we will do the things that need to be done. I will not do something which does not create a consensus."

Todt is expected to meet with Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera on raceday at Monza.
