Nico Hulkenberg is in contention for a drive with Lotus for the 2014 F1 season if – as expected – Kimi Raikkonen elects to leave Enstone to return to Ferrari.
An announcement is believed to be imminent to confirm that Raikkonen is to return to the team that carried him to the 2007 title, leaving a vacancy with Lotus for the new campaign.
Although Lotus insists that it retains hope of keeping hold of Raikkonen for another season, team boss Eric Boullier has now revealed that Hulkenberg is amongst those drivers being considered if the Finn moves on.
The young German remains one of the most highly-rated drivers on the grid despite enduring a difficult season with Sauber, although he enjoyed his best weekend of the year at Monza where he qualified third and then took home a fifth place finish.
"Nico had a great weekend here," Boullier told Motor-Total.com
. "We know that he is a good driver, I know him for a long time, he is really fast. As far as I know Nico is on the list, but also at Ferrari.
"Kimi is in a position where he has to decide. With us, he knows what he has. If he switches teams, he does not know exactly what he gets."
