Do you recall the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix
, when F1 raced under lights for the first time?
It marked the start of a new era for the sport as it expanded into another new market, with the annual night race having since gone on to establish itself as a true highlight of the calendar.
Few could have expected the drama that would accompany that first race however, most of it centered around Renault's Nelson Piquet Jr [pictured]. The Brazilian crashed out early on in an incident that saw the Safety Car deployed, which enabled team-mate Fernando Alonso to pit early and adopt a strategy that would see him win despite qualifying down in 15th.
The following season, it would emerge that Piquet had been asked to crash deliberately to aid Alonso, with the team ultimately being found guilty by the World Motor Sport Council. Renault was disqualified from the championship – suspended for two years – while both Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds were hit with bans.
Races in Singapore have since hit the headlines for the right reasons, and the same could be true again this weekend as an enthralling fight for the 2013 title continues.
Can Sebastian Vettel win for the third year in a row to extend his lead? Will Alonso add to his past success to close the gap on the German? Will Lewis Hamilton take a second Singapore win or will a new name appear on the top step of the podium?
