McLaren mugged in Korean Q2

5 October 2013

McLaren twins Jenson Button and Sergio Perez found themselves late victims of the timesheet reshuffle in second qualifying for the Korean Grand Prix, both missing out on a place in the pole position shoot-out.

Button lamented being held up by a Lotus on his last flying lap and could not better eleventh spot as he attempted to escape from the 'drop zone', while Perez then supplanted his British team-mate, having been demoted by Felipe Massa's improvement.

McLaren joined Toro Rosso and Force India in losing both drivers in Q2, although the silver cars will line up ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, Paul di Resta and Jean-Eric Vergne, who all found themselves pushed out of the top ten at some point in the session.

Sebastian Vettel threw down the pole position gauntlet with a lap of 1min 37.569secs – the best of the weekend, putting his Red Bull three-tenths clear of Lewis Hamilton in second place. Mark Webber, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Romain Grosjean – after leaving his run late once again – Kimi Raikkonen, Massa and Esteban Gutierrez, for the second time in two races, also made the cut.

Webber, meanwhile, will take a ten-place penalty from wherever he finishes qualifying.
