Daniil Kvyat to join Vergne at Toro Rosso

In a shock move, Toro Rosso has signed up 19-year-old Russian driver Daniil Kvyat straight from GP3 to take over from Daniel Ricciardo in 2014.
Toro Rosso has announced that GP3 driver Daniil Kvyat will drive for them in F1 next season, replacing Daniel Ricciardo in the team alongside existing driver Jean-Eric Vergne.

The team revealed the news via their official Twitter and Facebook pages on Monday evening.

"We are pleased to continue our policy of bringing on drivers from the Red Bull Junior Programme," said Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost. "Daniil can be sure that we will use all our experience of training youngsters to give him the best possible start to his F1 career."

“This is fantastic news, a dream come true and I want to thank Red Bull and Toro Rosso for giving me this priceless opportunity,” said Kvyat. “Ever since I began karting, I wanted to get to F1 and now that wish will become reality next season," adding that Monday's news was "a dream come true."

“I had a brief taste of working with the Toro Rosso team, when I drove for them at the Silverstone test and I enjoyed the experience very much," said Kvyat, another product of the Red Bull Junior Driver Programme. "The fact I am based in Italy and speak Italian will, I am sure, help me to become part of the team very quickly.”

The 19-year-old from Ufa in Bashkortostan, who claimed the 2012 Formula Renault 2.0 Championship title with seven wins, is currently lying in second place in the GP3 championship where he is competing for MW Arden. With one weekend remaining in the season, he is just seven points behind ART's Facu Regalia heading to Abu Dhabi in November.

At the same time, Kvyat has also been competing in the FIA F3 Euro series with Carlin where he has claimed one win, five poles and five podiums in the course of six rounds. He missed this weekend's outing at Hockenheim in order to work with Toro Rosso on straight line tests on their F1 car.

"He impressed our team with a strong performance and very informative technical feedback at the young driver test in Silverstone," said Tost of Kvyat's outing for Red Bull in the young driver test in July. "This suggests that the basic qualities from which he can progress are all in place."

He also clearly impressed Dr Helmet Marko, who said that Kvyat had proved "remarkable" whenever the team gave him an outing. "If a young driver proves talent, passion and a high level of work ethic, we give him a chance," Marko added on Monday. "That's the perspective of why we chose Kvyat."

"Strange they went for Daniil and not Carlos Sainz Jr as he was a bit quicker in the test they did IIRC." If you've followed GP3 this year you'd know Carlos is nowhere near ready for Formula 1, and Kvyaat has consistently been on top of him. "Another Paid driver. Quite sad." He is from the RBR Driver Academy, they don't *do* pay drivers...
