Prost, DAMS team up for Formula E
Alain Prost has revealed his involvement in the new Formula E initiative, having joined forces with the crack DAMS squad to enter the all-electric championship.
Alain Prost has become the latest motorsport 'name' to champion the new Formula E series, having announced his involvement with an entry from the French DAMS squad.
The four-time F1 world champion joins the Andretti family in announcing his interest in the FIA-originated championship, which is due to kick off on the streets of Beijing next September. Andretti Autosport was among the first teams to confirm its involvement in Formula E, joining Drayson Racing and China Racing on the early entry list.
e.dams becomes the fifth team to sign up, confirming its intentions at a launch at the l'Atelier Renault on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, which was attended by Prost, team principal Jean-Paul Driot, FIA president Jean Todt and Alejandro Agag, CEO of series promoters Formula E Holdings.
“I am very happy to be a part of the Formula E adventure,” Prost commented, “Being able to actively participate in the development of this new technology, which is 100 per cent electric is extremely motivating. As we've seen in other championships, 2014 will see a move towards more sustainable racing, proving more than ever that motorsport is the benchmark for the future.”
The operation will be supported with logistical and technical assistance by DAMS (Driot Associés Motor Sport), which boasted 25 years of experience and success in series such as FIA F3000, A1GP, Auto GP and both GP2 and GP2 Asia before wrapping the WSbR team and drivers' title in only its second season in that competition.
“Getting involved with the FIA Formula E Championship was an obvious choice”, Driot added, “Being the race enthusiast that I am, I was immediately convinced by this new concept of using fully electric single-seater cars and believe it will shape the future of motorsport. The implementation of new technologies, in the heart of the most beautiful cities in the world and in front of a young audience, lays the path for a new form of motorsport, which is innovative and respectful to the environment. I am extremely proud to be a part of this new challenge.”
Agag was naturally pleased to be able to add two more major motorsport names to his roster with just under a year to the first race.
“It is a great honour for me to be welcoming Jean-Paul to the FIA Formula E Championship together with Alain Prost, one of the biggest worldwide names in motorsport,” he confirmed, “The experience, pedigree and track record of both Jean-Paul Driot and Alain Prost is unparalleled and I know e.dams is going to have a big impact on the series. It's also fantastic to have such highly-established figures show their commitment to clean energy and sustainable mobility, and to join us in creating an electric future.”
