McLaren is set to delay the announcement of a new title sponsor for the 2014 season until the launch of its new car.

The team had been set to announce the replacement for Vodafone, who will depart at the end of the season, in early December.

However, team boss Martin Whitmarsh has now revealed that it is likely that the new sponsor will only be named when the 2014 car - which will be the last to run under Mercedes power before the switch to Honda in 2015 - is revealed.

No date for the car launch has yet been revealed, although it will be due to conduct its first pre-season test at the end of January.

"There will be some new sponsors, but I think probably, and I don't know because I haven't talked to our PR function, but there will be more of a fanfare at the car launch rather than an announcement on December 2," Whitmarsh said in the latest Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in.

"I think it depends on what partners want to do and where they want to do it. My own view is that we would be taking away from what I hope will be an exciting car launch next year, but we will see."
