Sergio Perez' final outing with McLaren has received another blow that will mean the Mexican will start today's Grand Prix from 19th place on the grid.

Perez crashed out of qualifying in Q2 when he ran a little wide at the turn five kink, his tyres catching the painted kerb causing him to be spat across the track and into the opposite retaining wall.

Replays showed that despite damage to the front and rear suspension of the car, the accident had been less dramatic than it had originally appeared. "My accident looked bigger than it actually was," he insisted, "But it was only a slight hit, and the car wasn't too badly damaged."

The incident nonetheless left Perez in a disappointing 14th place at the end of qualifying, one position ahead of his team mate Jenson Button.

However, after working on the car overnight, McLaren realised there had been more damage to the gearbox than initially realised and decided that they would need to replace the car's gearbox as a precautionary measure

That will drop him to 19th place just behind the Caterham of Charles Pic for the start of the Brazilian Grand Prix this afternoon, and make it even harder for Perez to exit Woking in style and put in the type of eye-catching performance he needs to secure a new seat for 2014.

Other penalties handed out by the race stewards this weekend in Sao Paulo include a 5000 euro fine for Marussia after drivers Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton forced their way into a queue of waiting cars lining up to take to the track at the start of Q1.

"The team released car[s] 22 & 23 so that they left the pit lane in front of other cars that were waiting in breach of Article 23.6," read the penalty notice.

Chilton had earlier also been handed a personal reprimand by the race stewards for crossing the white line at pit entry during Free Practice 3.

Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez was similarly handed a reprimand for the same offence, after stewards determined that "the driver did not stay to the left of the white line at pit entry as defined in the Race Director's Event Notes (Section 7)," also during Saturday morning's final practice session.
