Hamilton: I want title in 2014
27 November 2013
Lewis Hamilton has said Mercedes will be out to 'make the next step' next season and win both championships.
Mercedes managed to finish 'best of the rest' this year in the Constructors' Championship, but like the other teams in the sport, they have been made to look rather second rate by Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel. Looking to 2014, however, Hamilton is clear in his aims and wants to emulate his title success from 2008.
“We've just finished second in the Constructors' Championship so of course we don't want to finish there next year, we want to make the next step,” Hamilton told
Sky Sports News
“So for everyone and for me the target is to win the World Championship, both championships. Of course if we don't do it naturally there'll be some disappointment but we're not even going to put that negative energy out there.”
Asked if Mercedes have the championship winning mentality necessary to do that, he replied: “I don't think there's a particular World Champion mentality. Everyone has a different approach but I feel that everyone here is just as hungry.
"They've not have the success that perhaps they've deserved and they've not had the success of teams like Ferrari and McLaren and Red Bull.
“But they're hungry to have that and that hunger is what will take us there.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton added in a separate interview, that he will be pushing to do more in 2014 and that he wasn't happy with his form this year.
“The only real positive [in 2013] is the team's performance. That's huge. Nobody expected that and I couldn't have hoped for more. But I feel like I should have done more.
"For me, it's been an average year in terms of my performance, so I look forward to working hard and getting to the point where I feel need to be."
