Bernie Ecclestone: Fernando Alonso gave up a little bit during F1 2013

Bernie Ecclestone: I've been a little bit disappointed in Fernando [Alonso] because I'm a big supporter of him and of Ferrari.
F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his 'disappointment' with Fernando Alonso and believes the Spaniard 'gave up a little bit' during the course of the 2013 F1 season.

Alonso eventually finished runner-up to Sebastian Vettel, but the margin between the two was substantial – 397 points versus 242 – and relations between Alonso and the Scuderia were rather strained at times. Indeed Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo reprimanded his star driver after comments made following the Hungarian Grand Prix at the end of July, when he was critical of the F138.

“I've been a little bit disappointed in Fernando because I'm a big supporter of him and of Ferrari,” Ecclestone wrote in the foreword to the official F1 2013 season review. “I thought he gave up a little bit which is proof that he was looking for another team.

“I don't know whether the team is not competitive because of him or because the people who are running the team aren't getting the job done.

“He certainly deserves a car that is capable of winning races. Whether that Ferrari is or not, I don't know.”

Ecclestone also paid homage to four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel, remarking he is probably 'number one of the drivers I've known' – and Bernie has been involved in the sport for decades.

In addition Mr E was full of praise for Lotus pilot, Kimi Raikkonen: “This year I suppose I have to call Kimi the star driver, with the equipment he has,” Ecclestone added. “I think he was motivated on hope that he was going to get paid. He's a good guy to have in a team, good for us, good for the team.

“He's super, he's a racer.”
