Mercedes: 'Bits and pieces' still not in place

7 December 2013

Toto Wolff reckons Mercedes still needs to put 'bits and pieces' together in order to challenge Red Bull and mount a championship assault.

Mercedes made great progress this year, finishing 'best of the rest' in the Constructors' Championship, as well as notching up three wins, in Monaco, Britain and Hungary.

However, Wolff, Mercedes' executive director (business), has attempted to quell expectations going into 2014, a year that will see major changes as the sport adopts the new 1.6-litre turbo-charged engines and makes greater use of energy recovery systems.

“No. I think when you look at the kind of sustainable performance Red Bull has shown in the last four years they will still be the benchmark,” Wolff replied when asked by ESPN if he is confident Mercedes can challenge for the title in 2014.

“It's not going to be a while. We are just putting things together now and it's a matter of us ramping up performance. I see us being a title contender in the next couple of years.

“When? I cannot tell you; it's reading a crystal ball. We just need to put the bits and pieces together.

“This is a dynamic organisation. It's not static, you can't say 'well this is how it should be' - it's developing. Some of our ingredients are just perfect; we have two drivers – Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg - who are the drivers we want to have.”
