Vettel questions 'absurd' F1 points change

Sebastian Vettel questions the decision to change the F1 points system for the 2014 season
F1 champion Sebastian Vettel has questioned the decision to alter the points system in place for the 2014 season.

In a move announced by the FIA, double points will be awarded for the season finale in Abu Dhabi in a move designed to keep the title fight alive for longer.

While the change would have had no impact on the 2013 title battle, it would have seen Vettel lose the title to Fernando Alonso in 2012 and the Red Bull man questioned whether or not it was a move that needed to be taken.

"Imagine at the last Bundesliga [German football league] match there would suddenly be double points," he was quoted as telling the German 'paper Sport Bild. "This is absurd and punishes those who have worked hard for a whole season. I treasure the old traditions in Formula 1 and don't understand these new rules."

Vettel's viewpoint has been share by a number of fans and pundits like, with Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle amongst those to question if a change was needed.

“Double points for the last F1 GP of the season looks like an answer to a question nobody was asking,” he said. “Devalues the other races too.”

Just totally absurd. This is as bad as having 'Play-Offs' to decide a League competition! It totally undermines the value of a driver/team doing a consistently great job throughout an entire season, just to get nabbed at the post because the 2nd/3rd place driver coming into the last race lucks out with a win. Jesus, they manipulate just about every rule they can to create a spectacle (DRS, KERS, Pitstops, safety cars, drive throughs etc.) and now, not content with this, they add this farcical nonsense! F1 has become so detached from true 'Racing' that there really is little point in recognising it as a motorsport event these days - it is just contrived 'theatre.' Fangio, Villeneuve, Senna et al must be turning in their graves...
