Vettel picks up another award to mark F1 2013 success

Sebastian Vettel breaks the hold of athletics and tennis on annual BBC sports award after winning fourth F1 world title
Sebastian Vettel added further recognition of his fourth F1 world championship to a growing collection when he was named as the BBC's 'Overseas Sports Personality of the Year' on Sunday night.

Two weeks on from picking up a fourth consecutive Autosport Award, the German emerged ahead of stars from all sports to follow in the footsteps of sprinter Usain Bolt and tennis aces Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as the latest recipient of the BBC title.

The award, presented by one of the UK's two F1 broadcasters, comes after a season where Vettel dominated on his way to a fourth world title, including a streak of nine wins to end the year. That run equalled the mark set by Alberto Ascari across the 1952-53 seasons, and helped the 26-year old German match countryman Michael Schumacher's single season record of 13 wins.

"It's been a fantastic year," Vettel told the audience by video link, having not made the trip to Leeds to attend the ceremony in person, "Thank you very much for the award - it's something very special if I look at the list of previous winners…. I like to collect trophies, so I think I'll have to have a special place to put this one.”

Former Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, meanwhile, had to grit his teeth as he presented the 'Team of the Year' trophy to the all-conquering British Lions rugby team, who triumphed 'down under' against his fellow Australians.

@rob01 Give it a rest The guy has a good personality and a sense of humor (odd I know) and a little humility unlike a few others at the sharp end of the grid....in most cases. Maybe Top Gear will invite him back to convince you he's not another attention 'whore' unlike elsewhere on the grid.

I was watching this bit and said Vettel deserves the award but they'll never give it too him, 2 seconds later they did. Congratulations to Andy Murray, fully deserved.
