Mark Webber's decision to finally call time on his F1 career cast a different light on countryman Daniel Ricciardo's season, with the Red Bull prot?g? eventually getting the call to step up to the senior team for 2014.

As in 2013, Ricciardo's early performances didn't warrant automatic promotion, with Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and even Jenson Button being linked to the seat alongside Sebastian Vettel before RBR finally made its decision in the build-up to the Italian GP, some two months after Webber's announcement.

With Toro Rosso looking a little more competitive than its 2012 form, Ricciardo was able to challenge for Q3 appearances and points finishes, even though his results fluctuated between seventh and 17th at times.

His points were almost equally distributed in each half of the season, with highs of seventh in China and Monza before a single score at Interlagos ensured he doubled his 2012 tally.

Life will be a lot different in 2014, and it remains to be seen how the smiling Australian copes alongside a four-time world champion.
