2012 Driver of the Year position: n/a

After a string of impressive Friday morning performances for Williams in 2012, Valtteri Bottas was promoted to a race seat alongside Pastor Maldonado for 2013, only to find that Williams was a shadow of its former self.

With a car seldom able to challenge Toro Rosso, let alone any higher up the grid on raceday, Bottas and team-mate Pastor Maldonado had to take what they could get, with the Finn cresting in eleventh second time out in Malaysia, before bouncing between twelfth and 16th for much of the first half of the season.

Even an inspired wet-weather appearance in Q3 in Canada, resulting in third on the grid, was quickly undone by the FW35's lack of pace in the dry and Bottas wound up 14th. The frustrating results continued through the season but, while Maldonado chose to criticise the team, Bottas kept his head down, and a return to Q3 in Austin eventually produced a points finish as the Finn took eighth spot.

More might have been on the cards in Brazil had it not been for a clash with Lewis Hamilton, but Bottas had done enough to be retained, alongside Felipe Massa, for 2014, when he will benefit from Mercedes power in F1's new era.

Definetly earned hes spot on the grid. Maldonado may be paydriver and people dont like him, but hes definetly fast. Valtteri was pretty much par with him the whole season and when they got that FW35 somewhat sorted out, he just blew Maldonado out of the water.

For Bottas, it was a story of improvement. Massive improvement. He outscored a more experienced "driver" in Maldonado (though that's not saying much), and fully deserves his spot on the grid and in this countdown. Good season!
