Pirelli: Safety of 2014 F1 tyres not in question

Pirelli: Nico Rosberg's 'Mercedes was fitted with prototype tyres which will not be proposed again'.
Pirelli has insisted that the safety of its F1 tyres that it will supply next season is 'not in question', even though Nico Rosberg suffered a high-speed blow-out during the third and final day of testing at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Rosberg revealed the failure in a post on Twitter, and while he subsequently removed it, by then it was too late [see separate story - HERE].

As a result, following the conclusion of the private three-day test, Pirelli issued a statement noting that the 'Mercedes was fitted with prototype tyres which will not be proposed again'. The Italian manufacturer also added that '2014 development [is] going according to plan'.

Pirelli has been under the spotlight this season, following the 'secret' test it undertook with Mercedes and following a number of failures, notably those that occurred during the British GP and which resulted in changes ahead of the following race and for the second half of the year.

The full release issued by Pirelli today [Thursday] reads:

“The tyre tests in Bahain regarded a number of prototypes, which were completely innovative in terms of structure and compounds, with the aim of developing the most suitable solutions for the next season.

“This morning Nico Rosberg's Mercedes was fitted with one of these prototypes, a tyre which had only been tested in the laboratory and which will not be proposed again.

“Thus, the safety of the tyres which will be supplied for the next Championship is not in question.

“The accident which happened to Rosberg's car is being investigated and the findings will be communicated to the FIA and the teams.”

No other information from the test has been communicated.
