Top 10 F1 Drivers of the Year 2013:5:
7th2012 Driver of the Year position:
If there was a redemption story for 2013, Romain Grosjean
was it, the Frenchman transforming himself from 'wild child' to 'podium threat' over the winter.
Although he was denied a maiden victory by Red Bull's second half dominance, Grosjean was more often than not the man to take the fight to Milton Keynes' finest without any sign of the recklessness that dogged last year's campaign.
Although the year did not start promisingly in terms of results – a best of third in Bahrain preceding back-to-back DNFs in Spain and Monaco and non-scores in Canada and Britain – a vote of confidence from team boss Eric Boullier and the opportunity to assume number one status once Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari
deal was confirmed appeared to do wonders for Grosjean's belief.
He responded with four podiums in five races between Korea and the USA – finishing fourth in Abu Dhabi to break the sequence – and was denied another shot by engine failure at Interlagos. Seventh overall was the product of his early maladies and, despite initial uncertainty over his continued position in the team, should result in better for 2014.
Raikkonen's exit effectively hands Grosjean number one status, and the Frenchman should have the upper hand over the incoming Pastor Maldonado, particularly if he can continue to build on his 2013 form.Crash.net
