Sorensen tipped for Lotus F1 test role

Marco Sorensen linked with a move to Lotus as test and reserve driver for the 2014 F1 season
Marco Sorensen could secure his chance in F1 for the 2014 season after reports suggested that the Dane is set to take up the role of test and reserve driver with Lotus for the year ahead.

The 23-year-old is a member of Lotus' Junior Team and has competed in the teams colours in Formula Renault 3.5 for the past two seasons – taking sixth in the standings in 2012 and then finishing seventh last year.

According to Italiaracing, Sorensen – who is managed by Lotus team boss Eric Boullier – is now being lined up for a role with the F1 outfit for the season ahead.

Davide Valsecchi had held the role in 2013 but now appears unlikely to return in 2014 having been openly critical of the decision not to promote him into a race seat when Kimi Raikkonen was sidelined for the final two races following back surgery.

Rather than promote the Italian, Lotus re-signed Heikki Kovalainen only for the Finn to fail to score in either the USA or Brazil – leading to Valsecchi openly questioning the decision on his Twitter account.

“I told to @Lotus_F1Team that was better to choose my heart and my motivation than the experience of Kova,” he wrote. “I'm really sorry they didn't do it.”

Sorensen's previous experience of F1 machinery came in a run in a two-year old car at Paul Ricard back in the autumn.
