Lucky number for Magnussen in F1 2014?
Kevin Magnussen claims to have secured his number of choice ahead of the F1 2014 campaign.
F1's new 'numbers race' has gained another entrant, with McLaren newcomer Kevin Magnussen claiming to have secured his number of choice ahead of the 2014 season.
The Dane, who steps up to join Jenson Button in the Woking team's line-up, kickstarted his return to Twitter by announcing that he would carry the same #20 as featured on his DAMS entry in last years World Series by Renault.
“Here's some news,” Magnussen tweeted, “My driver number will be 20 this year, which I won the @WSR_Live 3.5 title with last year.”
Magnussen's assertion that he will use #20 has raised questions about when the final list will be revealed, with all other drivers having reported which number they have requested for the coming season. The FIA, which introduced the option of drivers selecting numbers personal to them, has not indicated when the final list might appear but, with testing due to kick off at the end of the month, and car launches before then, it cannot be far away.
Early suggestions claim that reigning champion Sebastian Vettel will retain the #1 – the only number which will not be permanently allocated to any given driver – for 2014, with runner-up Fernando Alonso apparently requesting the #14 he used in junior career. Nico Rosberg lists #6 as his first choice – the number is the one father Keke carried to the 1982 world title – while Felipe Massa wants #19 for his Williams debut. Team-mate Valtteri Bottas has requested the #77, #17 and #11 as his three choices, but has apparently already registered the trademark 'BO77AS'... Jules Bianchi clearly sees seven as a lucky requirement, asking for #7, #27 or #77, while Romain Grosjean revealed at the turn of the year that his preference is #8, followed by #29 and #11.
Magnussen's predecessor at McLaren, Sergio Perez, is also chasing the #11 for his first season at Force India, but several drivers ahead of him in the pecking order – decided by 2013 championship positions – have yet to reveal their choices, including Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen - thought to want #7 - and former team-mate Button.
