Jerez F1 test: Magnussen sure more to come from McLaren

Kevin Magnussen set the fastest time of day three at Jerez, but the rookie believes he will go even quicker on Friday as McLaren continues to improve
Kevin Magnussen says he expects to go even quicker on Friday after setting the fastest time of the third day of testing at Jerez.

The McLaren rookie had to wait for Jenson Button to drive the MP4-29 in the morning on Thursday before taking over the car in the afternoon, but he ended the day at the top of the time sheets and 1.7s quicker than his team-mate. With the McLaren having been fastest on both days it has run, Magnussen insisted the team has yet to set its quickest time of the week.

“This week I'm sure we will improve,” Magnussen said. “We know where we want to improve and I'm sure we will learn more tomorrow. I think we can improve this week and the important bit is to get a good understanding of where to improve coming away from here.”

However, Magnussen insisted he was not paying attention to the lap times at this early stage despite being quickest.

“As well all know it's winter testing and nobody really knows what the other cars or teams are doing so I'm not looking in to that too much.

“It wasn't a balls to the wall lap but I was pushing. We are trying to get good data and I'm trying to learn about the car so everybody is pushing but you have so many things that can play a part in to what lap times you are doing so I'm not looking in to that.”

With Thursday being his first day in the car as a race driver, Magnussen said he had learned where he needed to improve himself already.

“I've learned where I should learn more and where I should focus from now on. Also I think we as a team are building up an idea of where to go from here.”

This kid is going to seriously embarrass quite a few "seasoned vets" this year...and hopefully next year they'll be replaced by more serious talent. Can't believe the amount of money thrown at mid fielders by (ahem) professional organizations for minimal return. Here's hoping there's a major revamp of procedure in the not to distant future. One could start with the "Tsar of F1"...
