Teams to focus on tyres in Bahrain – Hembery

4 February 2014

Paul Hembery says Pirelli expects to have a much busier time in Bahrain as teams start to focus on the new tyres.

Pirelli's 2014 compounds were used for the first time at Jerez last week, but with low track temperatures and an abrasive surface an extra hard winter compound was also supplied to help teams with running. As the first test was essentially used as a shakedown for the new power units, Hembery said it would be in Bahrain where further attention is paid to the tyres

“The emphasis was not on tyres during [the Jerez] test: instead the teams were simply trying to get an understanding of this radical new set of regulations and put the first kilometres onto their cars,” Hembery said.

“With so much to understand about the new power units and aerodynamic rules, the teams aimed simply to increase their knowledge about the cars. The upcoming tests in Bahrain should allow them to focus on tyres a little more, having had two weeks to develop their cars and remedy any issues that have been identified at Jerez.”

With tyre issues plaguing 2013 and putting Pirelli in the spotlight, Hembery said the tyre manufacturer is prepared to make changes ahead of the first race in Melbourne if the Bahrain tests highlight any problems with the 2014 range.

“We too are completely open, flexible and ready to adapt our tyres should the tests in Bahrain, where more meaningful running will take place, identify any need to do so.”
