Renault's head of trackside operations Remi Taffin says the engine manufacturer has to take risks if it wants to be prepared for the first race of the season.
Renault-powered teams struck more reliability issues on the first day of the final test in Bahrain, completing just 154 laps between the four teams. While Taffin is confident that progress has been made since the second test, he admitted the approach it is having to take in order to try and catch up is far from ideal.
Asked if further steps had been made ahead of the final test, Taffin replied: “Yes, definitely.
“We've seen this morning that we still have some more stuff in from what we had on the dyno but it's still difficult because you know that you put everything you can in to the power unit – every single modification that you've got – and you try to do everything at the same time, which is not the normal process. Normally you try to do one thing and then another and another, so you try to do it sequentially.
“As a matter of trying to speed up things and take away the problems we try to move up by big steps and sometimes it's a bit more difficult to digest. But that's the way we need to go if we want to be ready for Melbourne.”
With Lotus admitting engine issues had prevented it from doing more running, Taffin also said it's fair to say Renault is still not at the level it hoped to be during testing.
“It's fair, we would like to be higher up in the rankings but that's where we are. We are obviously running different programmes so it is obviously difficult to compare, but one thing we can say is that we can now run our power unit the way we want. We can develop the power unit, we can basically go forwards and the fact that we were a bit late doing this means that it will be difficult for us but we are still planning to have a race in Melbourne.”
