Sergio Perez admits he is surprised by just how competitive Force India has been during the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend so far.

Force India was able to outqualify both McLaren cars as well as the Ferraris during qualifying at Sakhir, with Perez lining up fourth for tomorrow's race after Daniel Ricciardo's grid penalty. Asked if he was surprised to be ahead of McLaren and Ferrari, Perez agreed before contradicting himself somewhat

"Yeah I'm surprised, but at the same time we've shown strong pace throughout yesterday and today, so I'm not surprised anymore," Perez said. "I think this track is good for us and tomorrow we should be strong."

And Perez now has enough confidence in the car to feel he can finish on the podium on Sunday.

"Our target is to try to get the podium. I think we are in a good position. We got a good read on Friday, it's the first weekend where we could really do our work without any problems so I'm confident for tomorrow. In the race I know what I have to do and I think we can do a good race."

With much of the talk surrounding the Mercedes engine and its speed, Perez believes Force India has made a stronger car aerodynamically than it is getting credit for.

"I think we showed [how good the chassis is]. The engine is definitely good and this track gave us a good advantage on that but we beat the two McLarens, we beat one of the Williams and we were really close to the other one ... we're not Mercedes yet but we're doing a good job with the car.

"We are improving; I think we have big room to improve the car, so hopefully with the upgrades we will bring for China and Barcelona we can do the next step."
