Romain Grosjean says making it in to Q3 for the first time this season was "a good reward" for Lotus.

In wet conditions during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, Grosjean progressed in to the final part of the session and will start from tenth on the grid. While admitting part of the performance could have been a result of the conditions, Grosjean said it was a timely boost for the team after all the hard work it has put in to recover from a tough start to the season.

"I think it's a good qualifying session of course, and on a wet lap you can always find a little bit here and there but it's the case for everyone," Grosjean said. "It's quite easy to get tricked. I had hoped it wouldn't have rained before Q3 and then it would have given us something more like this morning, but it's good to be back here and it's a good reward for all of us."

And Grosjean believes the latest step forward from Renault with its power unit has proven particularly beneficial in wet conditions.

"I think to be honest every time they bring a step forward it's a good one. This one is particularly good in terms of driveability in tough circumstances so when the tyres are old and in the rain. In terms of recovery it is a big difference, but then in terms of power, the more you have the more you use and you don't see the difference."

With Grosjean having celebrated his birthday on Thursday he said he was targeting a timely return to the points on Sunday.

"I hope so, that would be a nice birthday present! I will do my best, give 100% as normal and if we do manage to do better tyre deg or something like that then it's not impossible ... I have not really looked at [tyre degradation] with the engineers after the long runs; I think it was looking decent but it's hard work in the car."
