Horner: You can see why McLaren need Fallows…

21 April 2014

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has played down any impending legal battle with rivals McLaren over the appointment of Dan Fallows as its new head of aerodynamics, insisting he has not reneged on any contract.

McLaren announced the appointment of Fallows in January, only for Red Bull to reveal him as its new head of aerodynamics in replacement of Peter Prodromou, who is also en route to Mclaren. Since then, Ron Dennis has declared plans to launch legal action against Red Bull, claiming Fallows is legally obliged to McLaren.

Despite this, Horner feels the situation with Fallows is clear, claiming the changes at McLaren in recent months changed his mind and that, because he is yet to start the role, he has the opportunity to take on a new role at Red Bull instead.

“The situation with Dan is very clear,” he said. “He decided he wanted to leave Red Bull for reasons of his own, but with the changes at McLaren he decided he didn't want to join and it was 100 per cent his choice to approach and see if there was a situation still open. It was his choice that he has taken. Getting lawyers involved if that how McLaren wants to act, then that is what is going to be done.”

Joking that it is 'easy to see why McLaren is looking for an aerodynamicist', Horner maintains that it was the choice of the individual to seek a role with Red Bull, adding that he cannot be forced to do a job against his will.

“I'm not sure how he can question the integrity of the team because it is the choice of the individual. Nobody can be forced to do a job against their will and situations change, as Ron knows well, probably more so than others. The situation has changed and therefore Dan is with Red Bull, has been for the last couple of weeks, and will be here for a while to come.

“It is easy for McLaren to draw away from their bigger issues… it's easy to see why they are looking for an aerodynamicist! We think their focus should be attracted a little closer to home.”
